Many Kuna Farmers Market shoppers know Ione Zufelt as the baker of the delectable
Nutty Knot - the homemade cinnamon roll, tied in a knot, smothered in icing and
topped with walnuts. Along with sweet rolls, Ione bakes an array of tasty, wholesome
breads. Early on Saturday morning her booth is laden with loaves of 5-Grain Sunflower,
Honey Butter, Oatmeal Raisin, Onion Parmesan and Potato Bread and Rolls.
These breads can be topped with homemade jams from Ione’s kitchen. Plum, Apple Butter,
and Triple Berry are some of her flavorful creations.
Ione and her husband, Cary, run Navajo Willow Farm. The name refers to the Globe
Willow tree and came with them from Southeast Colorado where they lived before coming
to Kuna seven years ago. Their move was driven by the desire to be near their seven
children and 20 grandchildren who are all in the area with the exception of one
son serving in the Army.
On the small farm, Ione and Cary start plants in the greenhouse and raise a garden
of assorted vegetables from Swiss chard to red potatoes to cucumbers, broccoli and
beans. Ione enjoys growing and arranging flowers. She also finds time to make homemade
soaps.
Ione still works as a nurse part time. When asked why she keeps so busy, she said,
"As I near retirement I want to stay busy and active for as long as I possibly
can. Getting to know the people who come to the Market makes the work I do rewarding."
