Bread toasted with butter or jam, bread with olive oil, bread for a sandwich, rolls
with dinner, sweet bread for a delectable treat. Bread is a staple in our daily
lives.
Bakers at the Kuna Farmers Market create homemade breads that not only satisfy the
needs for daily meals but indulge us with the outstanding flavors and wholesome
nutrition that only homemade bread can bring. Their breads are works of art with
unique flavors and shapes.
Stephanie Pearson makes an herb bread that is excellent toasted and for sandwiches.
She also created the “personal” sticky bun for those who want to make sure they
get all of the gooey sweetness intended for their bun.
Karen Fleming of Fancy Pickins and Home Fixins is carrying on the tradition from
her mother and baking potato rolls. These dinner rolls are moist and tender.
Market shoppers have enjoyed the breads by Ione Zufelt for several years. Along
with the sweet Knutty Knots, Ione bakes an array of tasty, wholesome breads. Early
on Saturday morning her booth is laden with loaves of 5-Grain Sunflower, Honey Butter,
Oatmeal Raisin, Onion Parmesan, or Whole Wheat.
Marri Champie is baking her favorites and branching out into sourdoughs. The science
and art behind sourdough is intriguing. These breads are made with special starter
that can be cultured from fruit juices and certain flours to produce the different
flavors and textures of breads. Also specific cultures complement certain types
of flour. The starters are kept alive by regular “feeding” and proper storage. Some
sourdough starters have been passed among families and friends for years.
More spring produce is coming on. Bok Choy, Chinese cabbage, spinach, tender lettuce
greens, rhubarb, asparagus, radishes, and leeks are plentiful. The first peas are
coming in. Enjoy these fresh, tender spring season items at their best.
