Jon Waddell brings solid oak boards into his workshop and transforms them into beautiful
patio furniture. He employs power tools including a table saw, planer, band saw,
router, sander, drill, screw gun, and HVLP (high-volume, low-pressure) sprayer.
Years of experience in construction and woodworking also play a big part in the
finesse with which Jon designs and builds his furniture. The name of his business,
The Wood Whisperer comes, in part, from the wonders a skilled wood craftsman can
perform with apparent ease. The other rationale for the name is how Jon speaks—usually
in a gentle tone--to his wood pieces to get the right cut or to nudge them into
perfect alignment.
Jon makes chairs and matching ottomans, tables, swings, gliders, benches. The chairs
have an Adirondack look with the slanted seat and back and wide armrests. Jon’s
design adds a curved back and seat for superior comfort.
To preserve the natural wood of the outdoor furniture, Jon applies a polymer finish.
It is sprayed on and must bake in the sun for two days to activate the water resistance
and UV protection in the coating.
Jon also designs custom furniture and built-ins such as fireplace surrounds and
book cases. He belongs to both the Southwest Idaho Woodturning and Woodworking Associations.
He participated in the Woodturning Association project that made thousands of pens
from exotic woods for the soldiers abroad. Jon enjoys teaching others the art he
finds rewarding and relaxing.
Jon and his wife live in southwest Boise. Jon can be reached at the Market or at
