Everyone is invited to the Kuna Farmers Market Luau celebration from 9 to 1pm on Saturday. Come partake of the feast that will include roast pig, corn on the cob, fruit cups, and baked goods around the Market.

Roast pork sandwiches will be just $1. A Vogel Farms pig will be hickory smoked for 21 hours in a mobile oven by Rene Schoop, the second generation owner of Meridian Meat and Sausage. Rene uses the old-fashioned method of smoking without the added phosphates. The tender pork will be served on potato bread rolls with a choice of Idaho barbeque sauces.

Our local “Elvis,” Jim McDonnell, will entertain with songs from Elvis’ 1973 concert in Honolulu. Chassidy Gaunavinaka will perform traditional Hawaiian dance. Chassidy is the 12-year-old granddaughter of Neal Durham, the Market vendor from Shoemaker Orchard.

In addition to the luau festivities, the Treasure Valley Model A Ford Club and the Western Idaho Model T Ford Club members will make the drive to Kuna to display their polished and restored vintage autos at the Market.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the first Model T. Over a span of 19 years, Ford built 15 million cars with the Model T engine. This sturdy, low-priced vehicle, nicknamed the “Tin Lizzie,” spurred momentous social change in America. The first suburbs developed as people could move farther away from the trolley lines. Farmers and rural Americans also welcomed the Model T. It had high ground clearance and was easy to repair. The inexpensive car brought an end to the isolation of the farm. As a consequence, small crossroad stores and one-room school houses began to fade away. Farm families could drive to the cities to shop and children could be transported to centralized schools.

Come enjoy the antique cars and the luau. Dress Hawaiian and get your picture taken with the old cars or with Elvis.

Fresh produce at the Market this week includes sweet corn, green beans, tomatillos, blackberries, melons, cucumbers and early apples. The main crop peaches and nectarines are now available.

The Market hours are 9 am to noon. The Market location is at Sandstone Plaza at the west end of Main Street. For more information, contact Cheryl McCord at 922-5113 or visit the website at www.KunaFarmersMarket.com.
