It is the peak of the season for summer produce. This year’s growing season for
many of the crops was two-to-four weeks later than normal due to the long, cool
spring. Now at the Farmers Market, the summer crops are plentiful. And it is the
time to get quantities and the best selection for canning.
The main season peaches are ready. These varieties have the fullest flavor and are
excellent for canning. The green beans are producing heavily, and now is the time
to pick some up at the Market or place your order for canning and freezing quantities.
Sweet corn is at the best stage for freezing and canning as well as enjoying fresh
steamed or roasted ears for dinner.
It is also pickling season. Learn more about pickling at the Corn and Pickle Festival
to be held this Saturday after the Farmers Market at Vogel Farms, 9501 Robinson
Road. For more information, visit their booth at the Market or phone 466-6928.
Mark your calendar for two upcoming Market events. August 30 is Bring Your Tractor
to the Market Day. All farmers who bring their tractors to the Market will be offered
a free lunch and photo of their tractor.
Tomato Tasting will be September 6. This is an opportunity for all gardeners to
enter their favorite tomato from their garden in the tasting contest. Prizes will
be given to best tasting tomatoes as voted by everyone attending the Market that
day. There will be categories for different varieties—slicers and sauce, cherry,
grape, and low-acid tomatoes. Stop by the Market Info booth for an entry form.
The Market hours are 9 am to noon. The Market location is at Sandstone Plaza at
the west end of Main Street. For more information, contact Cheryl McCord at 922-5113
or visit the website at
