This Saturday the Kuna Farmers Market celebrates Oktoberfest. Everyone is invited
to join this celebration of the harvest and the end of the Farmers Market season
filled with music, activities and German-inspired foods. See the Oktoberfest ad
listing many other Kuna businesses that are also holding special activities and
offering discounts for the celebration.
Vogel Farms will serve their own specially blended sausages (Wursts) and corn on
the cob. The Market bakers will have traditional favorites such as Apple Struedel
(Apfelstruedel), Pumpkin Bread (Kürbiskuchen), and soft Pretzels (Brezeln). Ione
Zuflet, Navajo Willow Farms, will be selling her Knutty Knots for just $1 to say
thank you to all of her customers.
The Oktoberfest activities this year cross cultures and span eras.
“Elvis,” Jim McDonell of Kuna, will sing popular hit songs.
He and his wife, Beccie, have kicked off a scarf drive to “warm the hearts and bodies”
of folks in retirement and care homes and senior centers of the Treasure Valley
where Jim devotes one-to-three days each week performing. This Christmas he would
like to give a scarf to each person at the centers where he sings. If you have new
or gently-used scarves you would like to donate to help meet their goal of 1,000
scarves, please bring them to the collection box at the Market or contact Jim and
Beccie at 340-8500 for more information.
The “Reel Live” GIRLS will give the event a Renaissance flair. This group of home-schooled
girls and their mothers will be dressed in Renaissance fashion selling flowered
head dresses and assisting kids in making their own. They will also be doing face
painting, kids’ activities and medieval games.
The group’s focus is on service to others. In a safe environment that includes the
mentorship of parents, the girls develop friendships and their individual talents
and leadership qualities. The group served at the Sun Valley Renaissance Faire this
summer. Visit them outside of the Wild Ivy Gift Shop and in the yard near the Farmers
Market. Visit the girls and Jacki Briggs at the festival for further information
on the group.
The Nampa “realm” of the Belegarth Medieval Combat Society, The Shattered Lands,
will demonstrate sword combat in the grass area by the Market. Participants fight
with foam-padded safety equipment made to reflect medieval weaponry. The sport is
fast-paced and requires a level of skill and aggression that challenges its participants
to be physically fit. Anyone wanting to try combat will have an opportunity participate.
The group is safety conscious and will assist with the proper gear and techniques.
They also pair appropriate sizes and ages of participants.
The Shattered Lands and the other Treasure Valley group from Boise, known as Rath,
hold weekly fights and combat events throughout the year. Anyone interested in joining
or practicing with the groups can go to www.belegarth.com or contact Jegg at (208)
250-7990 or by email at jeggrim@yahoo.com.
Meet the Candidates is also this Saturday at the Market. All candidates running
for office in the upcoming election are invited to attend. It is an informal event
and a good opportunity to meet and speak with those vying to represent us, the Kuna-area
citizens, for the next years.
Plan to celebrate Oktoberfest in Kuna Saturday, September 27, while selecting from
a bounty of the best-of-the crop produce from our Market vendors. Tomatoes, green
beans, tomatillos, pickling cucumbers, peppers, potatoes, apples, melons, and grapes
are available in good supply.
The Market hours are 9 am to noon. The Market location is at Sandstone Plaza at
the west end of Main Street. For more information, contact Cheryl McCord at 922-5113
or visit the website at
www.KunaFarmersMarket.com.
